Jan 8 update

I uploaded some photos into yesterday's entry, check it out. We are sitting in the library of Crary Lab. It is a "lab" with offices for visiting scientists. Our group has an office there, and the library is a bit open space with a view across the Ross Ice Shelf towards the Dry Valleys. We are going over the "food pull sheets", meaning, planning the raw materials for 14 days of meals for 6 people tent camping.

When walking around town (McMurdo Station, or "MacTown") we are counseled to wear sunscreen, our goggles, and a cap for shade. It is warm enough for just a fleece jacket when walking between buildings, so you forget there is no ozone and 90% reflectance of sunlight off the ice. We're supposed to put sunscreen up our nostrils.

Light snow all morning, but it just cleared up and the helicopters started taking off, resuming their flights after the visibility improved.

The "Galley" is where we eat, all the meals are provided. You can also get juice, coffee, milk, and cereal 24 hrs. a day. The turkey dinner last night was very good, the pizza for lunch today not so much.

When we are done compiling our list, we have to go "pull the food" from the wharehouse and pack it ourselves.
